Completed Local History Projects
The History of Tollerton Airfield
The project that the Society undertook to research the history of Tollerton airfield was the most ambitious project that the Society has, to date, been involved with. The project, which commenced in 2006 and took 2 years to complete, involved many Society members in many different ways. Research was undertaken at national archive centres and also at a personal level by interviewing persons who had had first-hand involvement with the airfield. This involved many hours of travel and research at various archive centres also relevant airfields, interviewing individuals who had associations with the airfield and the subsequent trancription of the recorded interviews. Once all of the primary research had been completed the material collected was used to produce a book detailing the history of Tollerton Airfield. The book was divided into three sections, 1929 to 1939, 1939 to 1945, and 1945 to 2007. Each of the three different sections was written by a different author. The end result was a book of around 270 pages with over 100 photographs, maps and diagrams. Many of the photographs were discovered during the research period of the project and had never been published before. Once completed the book was launched in February 2008. The whole project was funded with a grant from the Local History Initiative, without whose help the project could not have been undertaken in the manner that it was.
